The Times is has a much better grasp on what it takes to succeed on the internet. I mean, look at those animated gif advertisements! You can't help but click them over-and-over-and-over. So much so, you don't even read the articles!

Win-win!

I hope soon both sites will look like this!

If anything the seattlepi.com doesn't have a full staff and/or couldn't/wouldn't pay for enough staff with the right skills so this sounds to me like nothing more than knowledge transfer and extra FTE to try to shore up an overwhelmed staff.

while the out of touch cliche of upper management is true, every one of these newspapers in this country that can't handle the Web employ people who understand it and could capitalize on it.

they're just not in charge. but they'll be farmed out to clean up the mess, which is what this looks like to me.
