Get to Know Purdue University

Boiler.JPG The Husky NCAA Tournament train rolls on to round two. Those who picked Mississippi State as their upset special have literally had their brackets thrown to the wolves.

Next up for UDub is Purdue at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday.

What do we really know about Purdue University? The Boilermakers were the team the Huskies beat in the 2001 Rose Bowl, and then lost to in the 2002 Sun Bowl. But surely a team that witnessed the Huskies in two bowl games this decade must be made of pure fantasy.

Purdue University is located in West Lafayette, Indiana, and is a total engineering school. It also has a one of the best aerospace programs in the country, and Amelia Earhart was once a staff member there. Besides her, plenty of astronauts went there and managed not to crash in the South Pacific.

They also have the world’s largest drum, which because of its size takes two undergrads to bang…not unlike your mother.

Orville Redenbacher is the school’s most famous popcorn magnate alumnus. Did you know that he outlived both of his wives? Hmmm, could it be that the mysterious and still-at-large Black Widow Murderer is in fact Orville Redenbacher?

Those of you who were born over the summer might be surprised to know that Seattle used to have an NBA team. In fact they used to be quite good when Purdue product Steve Scheffler roamed the bench in the nineties. Well, before becoming a SuperSonic he set the single season Big Ten field goal percentage record at .004.

Mariner president Chuck Armstrong also went to the Purdue. We used to have issues with him, now, now, however, all is forgiven.

Comedian, and Murray’s best friend, Jim Gaffigan attended Purdue for one year.

The official mascot of Purdue is something called the Boilermaker Special, which until we found out it was a train sounded kind of kinky. Wait, it's entrusted by the Reamer Club, rrrrrrrrr.

One last thing about boilermakers, the drink. It’s a shot of whiskey or vodka taken with a beer. This seems like the perfect way to deal with either a Husky loss, or the realization that Washington will have to face UConn in another regional semi-final.

Quick boilermaker fun fact, and this is why we love Wikipedia: “In an episode of The Golden Girls, Sophia Petrillo tells a story from her past in which she and Pablo Picasso ‘slammed down a few boilermakers’ before making ‘passionate love.’”

I hate the word "bracket". Brickity Bracket!

This is hilarious. I didn't know I cared, until now.

omg steve winwood is back

He is back by popular demand for an encore performance.

Very nice summary...you left out the part about the Boilers kicking some UW ass today, though:-)

Another currently noteworthy alum is UFC fighter Stephan Bonnar. I'm guessing he eneded up in the UFC because there was nothing to do in Lafayette excpet drink and fight.

Go Boilers...
