Downtown's Sassoon Draws Big Spenders, Penny Pinchers

If you're anything like this Seattlest, fancy haircuts aren't exactly budgeted. Sure, any swanky Seattleite can trip into a downtown salon and fall into its charm, but it's us young, broke, and fabulous folks that need a good reason to splurge.

With lackluster locks and a same-as-always 'do, we were amped to experience Sassoon Salon, which opened up shop on February 14 down on Fifth Avenue. Any brochure can dictate salon hours and prices, so let's talk service first:

The cut: For the first time in a long while, we were given the professional advice we desperately craved.

In the chair of Lisa Rowles, a native Chicagoan and Creative Director of the salon, it’s clear your locks are safe. After we flashed her a slide show of thick-fringed gals, Lisa immediately knew what we were aiming for--not the heinously
bull cut bang lines
our budget woes had wrought in the past. Lisa spoke thick fringe and spoke it fluently as we walked out with the perfect brow-grazers.

Despite not being in the mood for color, bright-eyed colorist, Carmen Wenthold suggested a shine enhancing treatment. Ten minutes later, all hesitation was long gone as Carmen's suggestion proved perfection.

No lip curls were had. No pricey products were pushed. Lisa and Carmen both offered feedback and explained what does what. To boot, these stylish gals were nice as pie.

Some salons have that feeling where they have 17 minutes scheduled for your cut, and if lasts 19 then you’re widely regarded as that girl. Not Sassoon. We never caught the team staring at the clock or eyeballing the door.

The salon: Simple lines and minimal decor are downright refreshing, as there are no pictures of boyfriends, babies, or credentials cluttering each stall. Sassoon is confident in their product and they should be as each stylist/colorist was hand selected to staff the Seattle salon. Sassoon prides themselves on the quality of the cut, not the gimmicks of the style. This means those curling irons or copious amounts of gel won't be necessary.

Perhaps the Sassoon folks rolled out the red carpet because they knew Seattlest flies first class? While we can't be sure, it is clear Sassoon customers are for life. A few chairs over, a gal squealed with excitement to her shampooing apprentice what a relief it is to finally have a salon in Seattle--it would save her a trip to San Francisco, the next closest salon location to Seattle.

Overall: While we won't deter your teenage-girl notions of what a stylist is--you've seen Steel Magnolias--we should make clear that Sassoon ain't down to be your Dolly. That's right, the stylists at Sassoon aren't any ole folks with a pair of scissors and three-weeks worth of gossip.

The stylish personalities operating the brand-recognizing salon may intimidate the average Joe, but fret not as these fresh-faced professionals aren't just another stuffy downtown occupant. Despite its polished feel and steep prices, Sassoon is able to deliver a top-notch experience without coming across as snooty to anyone willing to forgo its swanky location. Quite simply: Sassoon is worth the indulgence for all budgets it can be squeezed into.
