Craigslist's Too-Good-To-Be-True Rentals

We haven't had to rent anything lately by perusing Craigslist, but a friend of ours was telling us the other day about a con they ran across. The scammer found an actual rental property offered through a management firm, copied it, undercut the price several hundred dollars, and said they were the owners, offering a special direct-to-you rate. But when our friend responded, they got a long reply explaining the "owners" were on a Christian mission in Nigeria and had brought the keys with them--easiest thing to do was to send a rent check, they'd send the keys. Luckily, CL has a little banner that says: "Avoid scams and fraud by dealing locally! Beware any arrangement involving Western Union, Moneygram, wire transfer, or a landlord/owner who is out of the country or cannot meet you in person." And so it goes.

This guy named GIDEON COLE whose email address is g.cole1111@gmail.com sent me an email regarding renting my house since he is relocating to the U.S. from England.

The craigslist scam was he would have his new organization send me $6500 and then he wanted me to send the balance less rent and deposits by Western Union to a woman named Shamik Spann in South Carolina. This black woman is listed on FACEBOOK. Obviously, the $6500 check was a forgery according to the company named on the check as issuer and it was the third forged check they had to deal with. It is not the first time he has pulled this scam. At least I made him or her waste $23 for the express mail postage.

That happened to me a few months ago. Man! I was so disappointed when I found out it was a scam. I had a hunch though, cause it was definitely too good to be true. I flagged the post and ripped the scammer a new one over email. Doubt it made a difference, but it made me feel better!

  • Also, a lot of who is rnting and ooking 4 plases now has truble tiping and speling.

  • There's one guy who is claiming to rent out his family member's house and walks them through and takes their application fee and deposit and then never delivers.

The "new" renter shows up to move in and finds the lady and she explains. Apparently, this guy has done this to dozens of people.

This happened to me too... TWICE. She got annoyed when I told her that I thought she was a scam.
