The bored tunnel option just got a big wet kiss from the Senate, though its House reception will not be so warm. Still, the clock's ticking and WSDOT, King County, and the City of Seattle are inviting you on a free short walking tour of the viaduct on Saturday, March 21, while the structure is closed to traffic for an inspection.
We've been, so we can recommend it. "Participants will also learn about upcoming construction on the viaduct’s south end, and the recommendation to replace the central waterfront section of the viaduct with a bored tunnel and transit and city street improvements." The tours begin at the Columbia Street on-ramp before you take your life in your hands and walk out onto the viaduct’s lower deck. Tours will be held between 9:30 a.m. and noon and last about 45 minutes.
Reservations are required. We will give priority to people who have not attended previous tours. If you would like to participate, please e-mail your name and contact information to viaduct@wsdot.wa.gov or call 1-888-AWV-LINE. After we receive your request, you will receive a confirmation e-mail with your tour time and other details. For safety purposes, no children under the age of 16 or pets are allowed on the tours.
