'Peace Project' To Benefit Families of Tyrone Love, 29-E
Only one local news story truly hurt this Seattlest's heart while we were on vacation: the murder of Tyrone Love on February 16. The 26-year-old promoter was shot outside his home in the CD for, by all accounts thus far, absolutely no reason. He worked with kids, dedicated thousands of hours of his life to combating gang violence in his neighborhood, was well-loved in the hiphop community.
That community, and the young black men and women of Seattle, has already raised some $17,000--mostly in small donations, Obama-style. In further response, some of the biggest and best local hiphop promotions companies, record labels, and youth organizations have joined forces to put on a show tonight they're calling the "Peace Project." Proceeds will benefit the families of 29-E, the rapper killed at Chop Suey in early January, and Tyrone Love.
We found out about Love's death via South End blogger Sable Verity on Twitter, and some of the most thoughtful and thorough coverage of the story over the next week or two can be found on her blog. Aside from the major daily news reports on the story, we can also point you towards the coverage and the resulting discussion in the comments on Central District News, as well as this eulogy on Brenda Stardom's The BS Report. If what you read in The Sable Verity, Central District News, and The BS Report doesn't tug at your heartstrings, check your pulse. This senseless tragedy didn't just happen to people who knew Tyrone; it affects all citizens of Seattle who are concerned about the increasing violence in our communities. We can't recommend enough that you get out tonight to Nectar in Fremont to experience some undeniably kickass hiphop for one of the most important challenges facing our city: peace.
Read more about the line-up after the jump, but here's the show information:
8 p.m. // Nectar Lounge // $5 // 21+
Tonight's line-up is rad all on its own, even without any higher purpose. Khingz totally impressed us at a recent show with his unbounded energy, passionate delivery, and dope material from his upcoming album Slaveships To Spaceships. Dyme Def is one of the tightest, easiest to love rap groups around, with star power and promise enough to deliver them to the national charts any day now. Check out their free track downloads on soulgorilla.com, handed to the internet weekly in anticipation of Dyme Def's next album release. D. Black is one of the cornerstones of local label Sportn' Life, with talent that landed him a collaborative track with Jake One on the producer's nationally released, critically acclaimed album White Van Music last year; his new material is hot, to say the least. Big World Breaks is a live music production team (read: awesome hiphop band), tonight featuring big local names Yirim Seck, Toni Hill, Soulchilde, SiriuS, and Godspeed.
Unless you're all but sewn into your pajamas thanks to the icky flu going around, we think there's absolutely no better place to be tonight. Please join us at Nectar!
