Tim Burgess, the Uncandidate

Ooohhhhh...what a sickening feeling to get this kind of note. Just when we thought everything was going so well with Tim. We were really thinking about maybe moving the relationship forward.

Were we ready for a new mayor? Guess we know Tim wasn't:

I've spent the past two weeks talking to people throughout our city about this year's Mayoral race and measuring whether I should launch a campaign to replace Greg Nickels. I started on this journey after media columnists, friends, and a wide variety of city leaders urged me to run. While I'm grateful for all of the affirmation, I've decided not to run.

Tim continues with what realize are just excuses. Either he wanted to be our mayor or not. Let's not pretend a list will heal the hurt.

Many factors influence a decision like this: timing, probable issues, fundraising, staff, energy, and the like. I concluded that this isn't the time to attempt such a campaign. My Council plate is full—youth violence, illegal gun trafficking, budget reform, and the economic downturn and all that means to our city. These issues deserve my full attention. I also carefully reviewed my positions on a wide range of issues compared to those held by Mayor Nickels and concluded that despite differences on some matters we agree more often than not. The result would be a campaign focused on personality and style, not a particularly motivating endeavor.

  • I'm sure he's not ready to fight a battle against Nickles. The campaign really won't be an easy one. Anytime you have to educate the population at this level, it's an uphill battle.

I am disappointed that he is not running, but I clearly understand. Maybe he will be ready in four years.
