Seattlest Poll: Toilet Paper vs. Trees

We've just been tipped off by a reader that the NRDC has luxuriously soft toilet paper in its sights. "Worse than driving a Hummer!" they say, claiming that "more than 98% of the toilet roll sold in America comes from virgin forests." They're trying to raise awareness about the environmental cost of this "virgin" toilet paper, especially when it comes in multi-ply packs. 98 percent seems high to us--we're sure Seattle is willing to chap its collective ass a little for the sake of old-growth. But just to be sure, we're polling. Be honest now!

And, to put it as delicately as possible, I find the sandpapery single-ply garbage isn't actually any more environmentally friendly in the end (no pun intended) because you have to use more of it to achieve efficacy.

John Wayne toilet paper. Cuz it's rough, it's tough, and it don't take no shit.

  • Where's the bidet/water option? Oh right, we're neanderthals and use dry material to clean ourselves. Gross.

That said, I do use recycled toilet paper, but follow up with non-recycled "adult wet wipes." So, environmentally speaking, I'm probably coming out about even in the end. When I own a house, I'll also own a bidet.

Now that the world knows all about my tush cleaning habits, it's time to run for political office.

  • To be fair, Yuppers, volume's not the only problem--it takes fresh pulp to make something soft.

Katelyn with the wisdom all the way from Istanbul! I gotta admit, I don't appreciate a sandpaper swipe on the undercarriage myself.

Among the many wonderful and wise things my mother taught me, this perhaps ranks in the top ten: life is waaaaay too short to fuck around with low-quality toilet paper.
