Dishin': Chomping Down Churros at Barrio

barrio churros 375.jpg Sit at Barrio's kitchen counter, and while you may eat lots of great food (we did, with tacos, chilaquiles, and braised short ribs among the highlights), you'll likely be craving one final dish: churros.

We spent so much of the evening watching the churro-maker squeezing batter in the hot oil, quickly fishing out the finished product, plating them with a small cup of xocalatl chocolate, and then walking them past our envious eyes. They're golden, glistening, and as we found out after we finally placed an order, soooo gooood. And not just dipped in chocolate. Here's a tip: Try them with some orange whipped cream. (The whipped cream comes with the chocolate mole decadence cake, but if you ask nicely, they'll send you some on the side.)

Although we were stuffed from our supper, we wolfed down our order of churros and lingered with some French press coffee. An order of five will run you seven dollars, but go to Barrio's happy hour (Sunday to Thursday, 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.-midnight; Friday and Saturday, midnight-2 a.m., with food served until 1 a.m.), and you'll enjoy four for four dollars.
