Wazzu Football Coach Branded Cheater, Glass Houses Completed

Oh frabjous day! Callooh callay! It's a very special morning here at Seattlest as we unveil a sports post from none other than Seth Kolloen, a man who has been called Seattle's worst sports blogger. We're not middle-of-the-pack here at Seattlest. We go big or go blog. Enjoy.

Last week the Washington State Cougar fans who dwell among you--probably not silently, if we know our Washington State Cougar fans--were crimson with schadenfreude after University of Washington football coach Steve Sarkisian committed three minor recruiting violations in his first few weeks on the job.

"Could yesterday have been any better?" crowed Nuss of the blog CougCenter after the misdeeds came to light on the same day the Wazzu hoopsters beat #14 Arizona State.

We hope Coug fans enjoyed their stone-throwing while they had the chance, because they've suddenly found their steel fortress of football rectitude transformed into a house of glass.

News broke yesterday afternoon that Wazzu's head football coach, Paul Wulff, will be punished for breaking NCAA rules at his old job at Eastern Washington.

Take it away, P-I stringer Howie Stalwick!

"An NCAA news release said Wulff demonstrated 'inattention to certain aspects of his program' and 'did not report various violations to the compliance office once he learned of them.'

The NCAA ruled that Wulff must attend an NCAA Regional Rules Seminar during each of the next three years 'at his own cost.' Also, Wulff cannot have 'any contact' with Washington State's football team the first three days of fall practice this year.

The first three days for fall practice! Bummer.

On the bright side, maybe those are the three days Wulff devotes to teaching the art of missing tackles and throwing incomplete passes, two of the main skills that caused the mediocre 5-win team he took over to backslide into a 2-win national joke his first season as Wazzu's head coach. (Although, as jokes go, the 2-win Cougars were a half-smirk compared to the belly laugh that was the winless Huskies.)

Wulff blamed lax oversight at Eastern for the violations. "You have to understand, this has been going on at Eastern for two, three decades," Wulff told the Times' Bud Withers.

Eastern gets the shit end of this stick--three-year probation, the loss of two scholarships, and a ban on postseason play this coming season. Oh, how their rivals at Central are laughing (we guess).

The real winners, we suppose, are people like Seattlest James who hate all the Coug/Husky bickering.

Now the state rivals have one less thing to argue about, since both schools have coaches who apparently view the rulebook similar to how your average Obama appointee views the tax code.

And are Washington fans cracking a bit of a smile this morning? If you could see our face, you'd know the answer.
