A Tiny Rant, with Buttons for Eyes

We tried to see Coraline this weekend, a movie that is advertised all over the place, that is adapted from a book by Neil Gaiman, an author we read favorably, that is directed by the guy who directed The Nightmare Before Christmas (which was not Tim Burton, btw), that was loved by The Stranger's Paul Constant, who gives the impression of being hard to please in this regard, that--if the previous weren't enough--was produced by an animation studio based right here in the Pacific Northwest, and we failed to see said movie because it's currently playing on exactly one screen in all of Seattle and tickets were sold out Saturday night. One screen? Seriously...(we're not sure who to direct this towards)...Entertainment-Industrial Complex? One screen in all of Seattle? We were forced to see The Wrestler which was great and we probably wouldn't have seen it otherwise, but still...we were in a Coraline mood.

Isn't "hard to please" the Stranger's whole shtick unless we're talking about monotonous emo shit?

I was really surprised Landmark Theatres was only playing it at the Metro, and not one of their bigger theaters. I mean, the Curious Case of Benjamin Button seems to have been at the Neptune for awhile, I was certain they were going to move that out for Coraline.

Coraline only opened at 2,299 theaters last weekend, so I wouldn't be surprised if it expanded to 3,000+ either this weekend or the next.

It's a short trip out of the gates of the emerald city to Renton; where Coraline is playing in 3-D. Which is the recommended way to view the movie. it was amazing.

It's also showing at the Metro, so make that two screens in Seattle proper.

That's a good point--I forgot about the 3-D-ness of Coraline and how that could affect availability. I think that 3-D was only available for select showtimes at the Regal, though, and that the rest of the time they just showed it regular. Personally, I could care less about 3-D; I just want to see it.

I tried to see it Friday night at 10pm and it was sold out an hour before showtime. I'm not sure why the Regal Cinema got it but my colleague and I guessed that the AMC's Pacific Place's 3-D ready theaters are tied up with My Bloody Valentine, and likely will then switch out to the Jonas Brothers 3-D motion picture event.
