Can't Miss It: Wednesday
SERENA RYDER: Who doesn't love a Canadian singer/songwriter? Only the very, very small of heart. Our sister site Torontoist called Serena Ryder "up and coming" back in 2005, and she just won the Juno Award (it's Canadian!) for New Artist of the Year in 2008. Plus, Wikipedia says, "Ranging musically between folk, roots, country, and adult contemporary, Ryder possesses a three-octave range." Here she is on the YouTube, here she is on the MySpace. Matt Duke opens, but you're on your own there.
7:30 p.m. // the Triple Door // $14
E-SCIENCE: New media and science writing/reporting--are the pixel-pushers helping or hurting?--is the subject of this talk in Ballard, sponsored by the Northwest Science Writers Association. Guests are Michael McCarthy, MD, ex-editor of The Lancet and health site owner, Luke Timmerman, writer for Xconomy, and Mark Briggs, author of the Knight Foundation guide to new media, and consultant. The Knight Foundation!? Like KITT? Moderator is Sally James, NSWA Vice President.
6:30-8 p.m. // PATH Auditorium, Ballard // FREE
RECESSION ART: Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo from Lead Pencil Studio are having a reception for their site-specific installation "Retail/Commercial." It's just opening, so we haven't seen it yet, but it sounds like it's worth popping by: almost all the materials used came from "going out of business" liquidation sales that occurred last month. There's nothing to buy--the installation presents you with "empty armatures, casework and architecture that supports the selling of goods." If you can't make the reception, the installation is up until March 14.
6-8 p.m. // Rainier Square, 5th & Union // $2 or a box of whole grain pasta or 16 oz. can of tomatoes (donations directed toward Northwest Harvest)
