Does This Motivate You?

StarbucksPlaque.jpg The plaque to the right is found in an elevator at Starbucks HQ. A Seattlest tipster snapped a photo and sent it along, wondering if maybe this indicates an unusual "reverse psychology" approach to motivational phrases.

We've studied it from several angles and still find ourselves puzzled. On the one hand, it seems to suggest that hard work is unpleasant, which is why the rich don't want to work hard.

But on the other, it's in an elevator in Starbucks HQ, which we don't imagine is filled with blue-collar workers. Are the rich people in Starbucks management different? Perhaps they do want to share the fun of hard work?

We're stumped. If you have ideas, that's what the comments section is for.

I only pay attention to motivational quotes when they have eagles soaring in the back ground and cool imagery to go with it.

Huh. Well googling the author tells us that Lane Kirkland is a famous labor union leader and that this is his most well known quote. Googling the phrase and it mostly seems to end up on lists of humorous work related quotes (though not entirely.)

So, I'm going to say that the phrase was intended to be a joke, but some HR person/VP in charge of plaques at Starbucks' headquarters doesn't get it.

Must be one of the pithy quotes they used to print on their cups.
