Starbucks To Close 200 U.S. Locations, Lay Off 6,000 Store Staff

Just last week we mentioned a memo that Starbucks layoffs were in the wind, but with the caveat that the cuts were supposed to hit management hardest. Half right. The Wall Street Journal says the carnage is in response to Starbucks earning only $64 million in the first quarter. Apparently the $64 million answer is to close 200 U.S. stores, with another 100 international locations on the chopping block, and to lay off 6,000 store employees, with another 700 culled from Seattle HQ and other field offices. For reaction, we turn to a commenter at Starbucks Gossip: "Holy s**t! It's the damn Titanic!!" CEO Howard Schultz has cut his salary to $10,000 from $1.2 million--the WSJ says, "Once his health-care coverage costs are deducted from his salary, Mr. Schultz will earn less than $4 a month."

I've heard elsewhere that he's lowered his pay to $4 after you pull out pre-tax health care costs. Then I thought: Damn that's some nice health care.

  • That Schultz is lowering his pay to almost nothing.

Yes, he earned 1.2 million last year. Yes, the company is in a mess (in part due to his departure, in part due to his return, in part due to the national economy), but he's at least walking the walk.

How many other CEOs and executives have said "Fuck my pay, I have enough. I want to save this company and I'm pulling out all the stops."

Not very many. PR stunt? Maybe. But it does have significant and real results. If other companies emulated this 'trickle-down' theory, what can be done? Could pension be saved for thousands without a tax-payer bailout?

I'll leave that to the accounting majors in the room to answer.

Troy: Just curious, since I assume you're not talking about 6,000 people losing their jobs: Which part of this story is "pretty fucking cool."

  • Wow. That's actually pretty fucking cool.

Listening to the call now... I find it sad that larger corporations have to comment on their jets now. Stupid witch hunts.
