Quantcast

Weekend Theatre: Jan. 22-25

OPENINGS: Athol Fugard's Road to Mecca, which opened Wednesday at Seattle Rep (Thur.-Sun. 7 p.m., Sat. & Sun. 2 p.m., tix $15-$59), centers on an aging Afrikaner in the boonies of South Africa who's spent 15 years challenging the conservatism of her community with her art. And opening Friday: Becky Poole's murder, hope at Annex Theatre (Fri. & Sat. 11 p.m., tix $10) is a new experimental solo work from a Seattle artist (by way of NYC, etc.), while Ghostlight Theatricals' The Misanthrope at Stone Soup (Fri. & Sat. 7:30 p.m., tix $15/$10) is a rock n' roll adaptation of a classic.

ONE WEEKEND ONLY

p2: Project Two @ ACT Theatre. Project Two is the latest show by the Seattle Dance Project, a modern dance company formed in 2007 and made-up of nine of the country's most talented dancers. As anyone who ever attends the ballet knows, more often than not it plays to wants of tutu-and-tiara loving traditionalists. SDP creates the space to do something new and exciting by applying the skills achieved through the rigorous training of classical ballet to non-traditional forms, which can be, by turns, either insufferable or the single most impressive thing you've ever seen. The key is risk, and SDP takes risks. They're also only on for one weekend, as part of ACT's Central Heating Lab series. (700 Union St. Thurs.-Sat., 8 p.m. Tix $25/$20.)

ALSO PLAYING...

Blind Spot @ Annex Theatre. "There are a lot of things to love about Annex Theater's production of Blind Spot. After all, the play is nothing if not imaginative." [Read our review.] (1100 E. Pike St. Fri. & Sat., 8 p.m. Tix $12/$7/$5.)

Marat/Sade @ the Balagan. Peter Weiss's mind-bending, genre-busting masterpiece Marat/Sade is a deeply disturbing meta-play influenced by both Brecht and Artaud...which may not mean a lot but trust us, it's awesome. (1117 E. Pike St. Thurs.-Sat., 8 p.m., Sun. 2 p.m. Tix $15/$12)

The Servant of Two Masters @ Seattle Shakes. Not Shakespeare! Carlo Goldoni's commedia dell'arte play is re-imagined in the vaudeville tradition. [Read our review.] (Seattle Shakespeare, Center House Theatre. Thurs.-Sat., 7:30 p.m., Sat. & Sun., 2 p.m. Tix $22-$36)

The Turn of the Screw @ Seattle Shakes. The other half of Seattle Shakes' counter-season, in rotation with Servant above. An adaptation of Henry James' legendary novel, two actors in 90 minutes shockingly pull off the story that brought horror into the modern age. (Seattle Shakespeare, Center House Theatre. Sun.-Weds.., 7:30 p.m. Tix $22-$36)
