Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition, Jan. 16-18

WHO IS INVERSE'S INVERSE? California hiphop duo Inverse are named thus because, to a potentially undiscerning eye, the two rappers' backgrounds don't have very much in common with each other. Sometimes opposites make the best hiphop, though, each side bringing its own wealth of experience and musical influences. According to their Myspace, Inverse raps about "happiness, pain and everything in between." With locals Cancer Rising, Akrish, Notion, and Know Choice opening up for them, this is going to be an easy-going, sunny hiphop show that will do right by you this weekend.

9 p.m., Saturday // Chop Suey // $10 // 21+ abbeybirthdayshow.jpg

SOUNDS LIKE SOUND ON THE SOUND: We happen to know that you won't want to miss out on the punk rock deliciousness going down tonight at everyone's favorite classic lumberjack's tavern, the Blue Moon. We've been wanting to see the mystery headliners badly for months and months now, and the other bands playing tonight--Vindaloo, The Drug Purse, and What What Now, are guaranteed to rock hard if our past experiences with Sound on the Sound's picks are any indication. Happy Birthday to SOTS, and to Seattlest Abbey.

9 p.m., Friday // Blue Moon // $5 // 21+

SOCIAL SCIENCES FOR THE MASSES: Malcolm Gladwell's in town! As an enticing preview, Seattlest Jeremy called Gladwell "a fuzzy-headed geek from The New Yorker" who will "regale you with his popularizations of decade-old scientific research." We've heard Gladwell is kind of an ass in person, but you never ever know. That very assiness might make his talk this weekend more entertaining than your average speech.

6:30 p.m., Saturday // Town Hall // $5 (adv. tickets sold out, limited at the door)
