Get Out: Guardians @ ToJ
Last Friday, we gushed all over the Absurd Reality Theatre's production of Peter Morris's Guardians, which starts the second week of its awkwardly scheduled run tonight at the Theatre off Jackson (409 Seventh Ave., 8 p.m., tix $15, $10 student). And we weren't the only ones--the reviews are in and A.R.T.'s play has pretty much swept the press.
Nancy Worssan at the Times writes that "this is no politically correct diatribe. It's a well-constructed case study of responsibility, an examination of the intertwined relationship between victim and victimizer. Morris sets lofty goals for himself and, except for some needed tightening, succeeds admirably."
The P-I disagreed with our assessment that the acting was top-notch, characterizing actors Adam Standley and Garbrielle Schutz's work as "drooping performances." Brendan Kiley at the Stranger is on our side, though, writing, "Schutz and Standley wisely keep calm and let the language do the work. Standley plays the Boy especially adroitly. We hate him, he knows it, and he just doesn't care."
So basically our biggest complaint is that this show is only playing Tuesdays and Wednesdays, through next week. You've got four chances left to see it, unless A.R.T. manages to find a new theatre to transfer it to, maybe with a better time slot. (We can hope, right?)
