Last night, concerned citizens met at Town Hall to discuss the remaining two viaduct replacement options on the table. Though there are some still holding out for options that have already been discarded, Gregoire, Sims and Nickels will be deciding between these two only: a surface transit hybrid (map [pdf], fact sheet [pdf])and an elevated bypass four-lane scenario (map [pdf], fact sheet [pdf]). We couldn't make it to the meeting, so we'd like to stage our own Seattlest version right here, right now: what do you think, and why? (Comments are welcome, poll closes at noon tomorrow.)

Around The -Ists This Week

Surface/Transit because it uses the term "transit"
I'm for surface/transit but with this caveat, that it be understood that its purpose is to allow westside residents access to the greater downtown area.
That leaves two populations that need help: West Seattle & Magnolia-ish residents that need to get north or south, past Seattle, and freight. Freight is a special case because the trucks need to travel on something that that will fit them and won't be worn out by their use. But both Magnolia and West Seattle clearly need another major access point so that they are not stranded when one is out of commission. A "bay" bridge?
These are all different constituencies with different transportation needs. So why not address them with the best solutions?
Why not a tunnel? Because it's an unpredictably huge expense, and when it is done, it's done. Tunnels don't adapt. They don't get bigger. They don't follow a better path. And because Seattle can't afford to site a tunnel in a liquefaction zone with an upcoming mega-quake.
I'm voting for option #3: something, anything, just do it already!
