Free Screening of Chop Shop at the Harvard Exit Tonight
Tonight marks the last movie in the Route 08: Scion Independent Film Series. This time the good people at Toyota are sponsoring a free screening of Chop Shop, the second film by writer/director Ramin Bahrani, best known for his depressing, yet totally stellar debut, Man Push Cart. Thematically, Chop Shop sounds like more of the same:
Ramin Bahrani's Chop Shop is set in a bleak junkyard corner of Queens, where "auto-body repair" is indistinguishable from auto-part theft. The movie is a gentle drama of getting by in a harsh city jungle told by a 12-year-old Latino orphan (Alejandro Polanco) who already knows something about the working world, and his older sister (Isamar Gonzales), who doesn't yet. In this chaotic world of adults, young Alejandro struggles to make a better life for himself and his 16-year-old sister, Isamar.
The screening is free with RSVP. Film starts at 9 p.m., but brave the cold to show up early for complimentary beers, music by DJ Cide, and Scion swag.
8 p.m. doors, 9 p.m. film // Harvard Exit // 807 E Roy St // Free with RSVP, 21+
