Neighborhood News and Local Blog Roundup

"Here Comes The Snow" by Seattlest Flickr Pool Contributor Slightly North.
  • We knew we'd heard that name somewhere--Steve Almond, who wrote a lovely innocuous column for Martha Stewart Living about Christmas candy, is familiar to us through his at-times NSFW short story collections. Matthew at Roots & Grubs points out that he, too, can write about Christmas candy, and his bibliography is 99% safe and Martha-approved.
  • West Seattle Blog breaks out the snow talk! They're pointing everyone towards a community Christmas tree lighting, and as is the usual, WSB also has a scoop: the weatherman has a blog.
  • The school closure meetings have everyone in a tizzy about their neighborhood schools. Capitol Hill Seattle reports with relief on their beloved Lowell, which was removed from the closure list, and the commenters react with skepticism and challenging questions (like, what happened to all the rhetoric about Lowell's building falling apart?).
  • The streetcar debate rages on over at Central District News, but they're not talking about "if'"; they're talking about exactly "where." Why not, for instance, move the proposed Broadway route to 12th? Or angle the route off to the east on Boren, then return to Broadway via Madison? Good luck, guys; we'd support the move to 12th with no hesitation.

Re the streetcar on 12th, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Not in my front yard!

i guess it comes down to whether the city wants to create new development around the streetcar on 12th, or better serve all the existing development on broadway.

  • grid

serving 12th has some strengths. certainly sending the streetcar up 12th could allow 12th to develop into an interesting, more subdued alternative to the congestion that rules broadway.

i don't think this is likely to happen though. the budget has broadway in mind. broadway is more prominent, and more people would be exposed to the streetcar and encouraged to use it. also, a strength of the streetcar is that it doesn't have to pull in and out of traffic to make stops.

It's slightly early for 12th, which may be a point in its favor. Streetcars are great for high-density, high-pedestrian "strips" where people can travel from one end to the other and hop on and off along the way. Connecting 12th at Pike/Pine to all of Broadway would be great.

No kidding, and it's only a few blocks off Broadway. I've been whining about wanting a bus route along 12th for years now, a streetcar there would be acceptable as well. Should go from N. Capitol Hill to Beacon Hill, or at least to the I.D.

12th makes a lot more sense; it's just not as busy. I've always wondered why I see emergency vehicles fight their way up Broadway when they could use 12th instead.
