Security Guard Stabbed at Southcenter

The plus sides to working security at Southcenter Mall are that you probably get employee discounts (or the homie hookup) at the food court, you have all kinds of insider info on big news stories, and you get to use a radio to talk to your coworkers (always thrilling). The down side, of course, is that you are more likely than the average office worker to get stabbed in the line of duty. Last night, a plainclothes security guard at the Southcenter Sears store was knifed in the hand and arm by a man from Monroe who was trying to avoid getting detained for shoplifting. The consequence-shirker was subsequently arrested when the cops found him hiding in the bushes by the Outback Steak House.

The obvious question here is: what was this guy with a knife, aged 46, doing at Southcenter when there's a perfectly good Sears up in Monroe? The less obvious, but certainly not more interesting, question is: when are the entertainment powers that be going to make a serialized made-for-TV movie about Southcenter's crazy year?

Southcenter really needs to hire some armed security guards. Seattle security companies such as www.centralprotection.com provide armed security guards. I think we would all feel much safer.

  • It's like the peacock. If peacocks had opposable thumbs, they'd carry guns too. At least, that's the prevailing scientific theory put forth by zoologists.

How often can a regular person type "zoologist?" Not often enough.

Gangstahz like to hang around high end places to appear more bling bling to attract females. I saw it on the Discovery channel. Very interesting.

  • Yeah, it's obvious that they want to be an upscale mall now, and everything from the music to the decor to the stores makes it clear that they'd like to avoid the teenage riffraff.

However, they didn't build a new dumpy mall for all the teenage riffraff to visit instead. So Southcenter it is.

(All the crime there makes it difficult to justify bitching about their parking situation, which is horrifying and evil but not on par with actual bloodshed.)

  • James, if anything it's made it worse. I remember the good ol' days. Everyone would hang out outside the food court, just yellin'. Sometimes they'd get in fist fights, but otherwise it was general loitering with attitude.

Then they started pumping out shitty music and annoying voices. Then they remodeled. And now look-- violence. Nice things make poor people mad

Wow... shows how long it's been since I've been to Monroe!

good article but sears left monroe many years ago... so of course if you're going to stab someone might as well be someone from another city. Makes it less awkward on the off chance you run into that person shopping after you get out. Also a plus, the twin rivers prison will make it easier for family to visit.

  • Poor Southcenter. Their high-class remodel doesn't save them from low-class crime.
