Football Friday: Leftovers Edition

The Wave
"The Seahawk Wave," by Seattlest Flickr contributor seattlemunicipalarchives

We are sitting in front of the TV watching the Issaquah-Skyline 4A championship game, still working on a heaping plate of leftovers from last weekend. (Does turkey have an expiration date?) This game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was moved to accommodate Bellevue, who plays Union in the 3A final. Bellevue played a rescheduled game earlier this week after their bus rolled over on the way to last week's game. Here...grab a plate.

The sports news this week is all about "Sark." Not talking about Cutty Sark, in honor of Repeal Day. Nor Jim "Sark" Sarkine, who was our college roommate, and, at 6' 9" and 250 pounds (and center of our college basketball team), invented the "carpet drag," a maneuver where he would grab us by the ankles and drag us around the apartment like a bag of laundry, gathering rug burns and dust balls along the way. (Jim's got sewage issues, apparently.)

We are talking about soon-to-be-new Husky head football coach Steve Sarkisian, who is currently employed as offensive coordinator at USC, alma mater of Orenthal James Simpson, who today is looking at 8-10 years in the big house for armed robbery. And we don't mean Michigan Stadium.

The Sarkisian hire is all about saving the Two Jakes: salvaging the career of oft-injured, cannon-armed airhead Jake Locker and putting UW back into the recruiting race for all-world prep QB Jake Heaps, who is currently building his resume as a junior at Skyline. (Right on cue, Jake Heaps tosses to Chandler for Skyline TD, Skyline leads 7-0; 0:26 1st quarter) Sarkisian has had a hand in the development of Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart and John David Booty, all of whom went on to the NFL. (Issaquah hits a short FG, Skyline 7, the 'Quah 3, 6:56 2nd quarter. Heaps answers to Knecht TD, 4:06 2nd quarter Skyline 14, Issaquah 3) Sarkisian is expected to be officially announced sometime next week.

Meanwhile, Willingham was seen leaving Montlake Thursday with a full duffel bag, after coaching his last practice at UW. "Sometimes you lose, but you are not a loser," he told the Chicago Tribune this week when asked about Notre Dame's decision to retain head coach Charlie Weis.

With the pieces falling into place at Montlake, Seahawks fans can now begin bracing themselves for the Jim Mora Era. In celebration, the Hawks face the Patriots this Sunday with zero starting offensive linemen and a backup QB. The Seahawks are fast becoming the worst team in the NFL, and we'd never thought we'd ever type that. (Gallatly runs for Issaquah TD, conversion failed. Skyline 14, Issaquah 9 5:00 3rd quarter.)

In a cubicle in the corner of Seahawks HQ, the Sounders braintrust have been busy. Last week, they added to their roster in the expansion draft, and maybe stole a coach. This week, they held a fashion show and announced the names of their marching band and fan club. ("The Sound Wave" and "Sounders FC Alliance Presented by FSN" Doesn't really flow, does it?) On the field, the SPU Falcon ladies soccer squad play in the D-II National Championship game on Saturday.

Predictions: Cal smashes Huskies on Saturday, Patriots whack Seahawks on Sunday. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

(Issaquah rushing TD, conversion fails, Issaquah 15, Skyline 14. 8:30 left in 4th quarter. Heaps to Knecht for Skyline TD, conversion fails. Skyline 20, Issaquah 15. 4:29 left. Issaquah drive stopped as clock runs out. Skyline wins 4A title.)
