Last year we lamented the loss of Takohachi, our favorite restaurant for saba shioyaki (grilled mackerel). As much as we loved the fish itself, they served it with a bowl of yaki meshi (fried rice) so full of bacon goodness you’d have been a fool to order the white rice instead. (Rumor has it the Takohachi chef is replicating that fried rice at Uwajimaya in Bellevue. Anyone been?)
Saba shioyaki’s a staple at most Japanese restaurants. It should come with grated daikon (to which you add soy sauce and put atop your bite of fish), miso soup, rice (okay, it’s usually white rice), and pickled vegetables or salad. But where to get good saba shioyaki? Koraku (where everything was $5) is long-gone, and in the post-Takohachi era, we’ve been looking.
Our most recent try was at Fuji Sushi as part of a fuller bento meal. Not bad, but the mackerel wasn't as crispy or tasty as we want. Any suggestions? Or has anyone tried making it at home with one of those fish grills/broilers for sale at the Korean grocery stores?

As ardent patrons of the late, great Takohachi we made our way out to the eastside Uwajimaya and were thrilled to see the same colorful drawings that used to grace the old establishment. Also immediately recognizable were the most of the staff and items from the menu. The fried rice, curry, miso ramen, and croquettes are there and almost as good. Worth the trip on occasion.
Oh, and Ichiban's mackerel's pretty darned tasty and their nanbanyaki should carry a surgeon general's warning about addictiveness.
