I got one can and now refill it from the bulk aisle. The can is so cute!

I always make them the night before and reheat them in the morning -- get the water boiling, stir in the oats while your brushing your teeth, then turn off the heat and hop into bed. It's all cooked by the time you get up.

We had this problem in Bellevue and our last apartment on Capitol Hill. One trip to IKEA for a variety of glass jars have helped solve this problem for us, especially for the bulk items we like to pick up.

Steel cut oats are awesome. Incredibly tasty. I agree that buying oats in a can, no matter how stylishly retro or shiny the can, is a waste. After all, we're talking about oats. As in, horse feed. $6.25 per can (at Amazon) strikes me as a bit pricey for minimally-processed grain.

@mbq: great tip on the rice cooker!

I never cared for oatmeal growing up, but discovered steel cut oats in the last year or so, and I really like them. I generally toast them in a skillet for a few minutes with a small amount of butter, then add them to salted boiling water, cover, and turn off the heat. Two to eight hours later, they're ready with no stirring or tending necessary, and they refrigerate and reheat really nicely.

a rice cooker, if you an idle one that's not busy making rice at the time, are ideal for preparing oats like these.
