Help Tom Friedman! Buy Westlake Center

NYT über-pundit Thomas Friedman is married to Ann Friedman (née Bucksbaum), whose family (still) runs General Growth Properties, a Chicago-based REIT heavy into malls (they own eight in Washington alone). General Growth is trying to make some hefty debt payments and has to unload some of its inventory, which means Westlake Center downtown may now have a For Sale sign attached. The price tag is estimated at around $150 million. Who wants to start the bidding?

What say we buy it and then tear it down to turn it into the full-size park that WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE!

    I said something smahrt!!!

  • I was actually thinking about that yesterday Jesse. I was up stealing use of a free restroom, and I saw the monorail go by and the street car go by and I said to myself "This really is kind of the center of Seattle, geographically speaking."

But nice comparison to Times Square. I think it does sum up what that area should be, nicely.

Im happy its being put up for sale.

If I had a bajillion dollars Id redo the whole outside, upgrade the interior, get a few better stores and make the south face into something like the Fashion Show Mall down in Vegas. Westlake is like the epicenter of the PNW and it should have some show-offy technology. A little more Times Square, a little less crap.

  • Condos! I see condos!
