No Street Partying for Us, But We Didn't Miss It

S for my name!Little Miss Seattlest mostly watches Yo Gabba Gabba! and Pixar movies (on weekends), so she was thrilled to stay up late and watch the election with her parents. Obama's already delivering big happiness to her life. He also, apparently, has a fun name to say.

Earlier in the evening, she told us she'd voted for Obama in her preschool class, and we told her that that was great, but she could always keep her votes secret if she wants.

When the networks started calling the election, we cried for a few seconds, then had to explain about happy tears.

Then we played with her dollhouse with her, until Obama was ready to speak. We thought it had been tricky explaining to a three-year-old why Daily Show election coverage was funny, but it was exponentially more complicated to start explaining why this moment wasn't just big, but historic, epic, unprecedented. Then we relaxed and talked about Obama's daughters to her, and his wife, and she asked us questions, and we were thrilled to share the moment with her even if it meant missing the revelries elsewhere in the city.

More than anything, we're delighted that she's going to remember George W. Bush about as well as we remember Richard Nixon: Not at all. Obama gets to be the first president she's really aware of. We're stuck with vague early memories of Gerald Ford. She wins.

(She was also happy to hear that people like the Pike Place Market and voted to give it some money, as it's one of her favorite places.)

S is for Seattlest. This Halloween-night photo of our daughter (as a pink kitty fairy) was taken by us.
