i giggled, is that wrong?

I can barely hold back a tear for that poor old Beetle in the background. Getting old is no fun, even for a car.

I can't stand those cars. Yes, they're cute and can fit anywhere, but you really don't get what you pay for. Premium fuel and at least $16K should get you better than 33mpg. Much better fuel efficient choices out there.

Dead on, fdq. Cuteness is all they having going for them. Basically a Palinmobile.

Really, when you look at it, it's really hard to understand why anyone would buy one.

fdq & bilco,

sometimes cuteness is enough. plus, if you can't see the value in a car where you can fit two into one parking space, then i just don't know what to tell you.

Well, the big problem with cars isn't how much space they take up - tho lord knows they take up a lot.

The problem is getting efficient cars to folks at an affordable price. These cars just aren't all that efficient, and they're not cheap. Check out any review of this machine, they're all the same - way overpriced for a marginal gain in fuel efficiency.

Late-90's Honda Civic
Similar fuel economy
Way more room
about $2500

New Toyota Corolla
Similar fuel economy
Way larger / nicer (probably safer) vehicle
about $15k

Those cars are for people who want to "make a statement" about something - perhaps that they couldn't quite afford a Prius - but were willing to pay $16k for a less functional vehicle that allowed them to experience a similar level of smugness.

Everything that's wrong with Seattle condensed into a single parking spot.

Truly there are smarter cars out there for the space value. Some car... starts with a T is as long as a regular car is wide, so you can park it to a T against the curb.

now that is smart.

"Everything that's wrong with Seattle condensed into a single parking spot."

Actually "arrogantb", its everything that's wrong with Seattle condensed into a single comment. It's Mercedes's entry into the sub-compact market, probably more fun to drive than a Corolla (and cheaper), and certainly less maintenance (not to mention a warranty) than a used 10 year old car. Most importantly, who cares? Being angry about a little car is silly.
