"Jake Heaps" by Flickr contributor afred
Who is the best quarterback in the state? Matt Hasselbeck? We don't think so. Jake Locker? Sorry Husky fans. You are only half right.
Behold Jake Heaps, the junior QB for the top-ranked Skyline Spartans. Last season, as a sophomore, Heaps led Skyline to the state title, passing for 3095 yards and 31 TDs (with 7 ints) and he rushed for another 14 TDs. This season, Heaps has guided the team to a 7-0 record, which includes the 38-0 dismantling of 3rd-ranked Issaquah last Friday night. He threw for 308 yards and tossed 4 TDs in that game, which was played in a steady rain.
CBS College calls him the top recruit of the Class of 2010. Not just in the state, but in the entire nation.
Seattlest thought the Huskies had the advantage in the Heaps recruiting race last season for two reasons. First, Heaps' center last year was Nate Willingham, son of the Husky head coach. And in the off-season, Heaps' head coach at Skyline, Steve (don't call me Ricky) Gervais was hired as an assistant on the Husky coaching staff. But things aren't working out so well on the field for Willingham, who'll likely spend next year bemoaning what could have been from the unemployment line.
Heaps has over a dozen verbal offers already, and he'll be able to pick any school he wants when the time comes. He hasn't really tipped his hand at a college preference, but since he's a Mormon, it would appear that BYU would have an advantage and WSU would be right out.
Here's Heaps in all his sophomore glory. (O'Dea fans should turn away. You were warned.)
Saturday
The Cougs are idle, meaning the staff at the Pullman Head and Neck Clinic can take a well-earned weekend off.
Notre Dame at UW (5:00 p.m.,ESPN2, 950)
Dana Jacobson was right. Touchdown Jesus can bite us. It's a freaking giant mosaic, for Chr... gosh sakes. If you think Yankees fans are obnoxious, just wait until the Golden Domers hit Montlake tomorrow. (Actually, that's something we'd like to see.)
Prediction: Huskies 27, Irish 10
Sunday
Seahawks at San Fran (1:15 p.m., FOX, 710 KIRO)
It's a road game. Matt Hasselbeck is still out. The Niners fired head coach Mike Nolan this week, then instructed the janitor to scrape just the last name off his office door. Mike Singletary is the interim head coach, but we all know another Mike will be taking over next year.
Prediction: Buccaneers 34, Seahawks 13
Don't like football? Sign up for a tryout with the Seattle Sounders FC. They are holding open tryouts in Spokane, Tukwila and Yakima in November. "The open tryouts will be filmed for a reality-TV series which will be televised in late January 2009. A minimum of three finalists from each market will take part in a televised one-hour tryout in Seattle." We can't wait to see what they have to do to earn immunity.

Tuesdays are Muppet Days

Brad,
How do you really feel about Notre Dame!?
Notre Dame. Blech.
Anyway, a point of clarification on the Heaps/BYU link. Jake himself has indicated that since he's LDS, BYU is an obvious possibility. It wasn't just an assumption we made.
