Darcy Burner: Dismal Scientist or Liar?

With only a couple weeks till election day, it's nice to see that the Reichert–Burner race has become downright pissy. The latest skirmish is over Darcy Burner's academic credentials. This morning, Seattle Times reporter Emily Heffter took the Republican bait and wrote a piece questioning the veracity of Burner's claim—made during the debate on Oct. 10—that she has a degree in economics from Harvard.

In recent weeks, congressional candidate Darcy Burner has touted her Harvard degree in economics when talking about the nation's financial crisis and her opposition to the bailout package passed by Congress...But while Burner studied economics at Harvard, she doesn't have a degree in the subject.

Whether or not this is true is a somewhat tricky question. Harvard doesn't offer minors, so a dual focus is run through your major department and unlike with a true minor, you have to write a thesis conjoining the two. Apparently, it's pretty hard (like getting into Harvard).

That said, Burner, strictly speaking, does not have a degree in economics—she has a degree in computer science with an economics focus, and anyway, the idea that an undergrad education gives her the deep knowledge of economic problems to help lead us out of our current morass is a rather tenuous proposition.

At the same time, rabid left-wing blogs have responded by launching attacks against the Times. A post over at DailyKos charges: "The real story happening in the 8th Congressional District, which the Times intrepid reporter seems intent upon ignoring, is the illegal loan Reichert has received to run his advertising."

Turns out, that claim was wrong. Heffter noted the Reichert ad controversy, saying, "The Burner campaign filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission alleging that Reichert's recent purchase of television ads on credit was effectively an illegal corporate loan," and further noted that the charges regarding Burner's education originated with the Republican National Congressional Committee.

  • Not to beat a dead horse, but this is the Dean's recounting of the interview he had with Heffter. It is between him and, I presume, Darcy Burner:

[I] Talked to her and told her you had a degree in CS with a specialization in Ec. She said you were claiming to have a degree in Ec and I just repeated myself. She asked me what that consisted of and I said a block of Ec courses. She started to ask me if that would make you qualified ... and I cut her off, saying I couldn't judge economics qualifications. She thanked me and said that was helpful.

My computer has been acting up, so I thought it didn't post.

Thanks for thinking enough of my posts to stalk me, though.

  • Actually, it was an hour before. Same topic though.

Didn't you make the exact same comment yesterday?

If Paul Krugman can win a Nobel Prize for Economics, perhaps it is best that Burner be "untrained" in this field.

Economics is known as the "dismal science," hence the headline.

As for the claim "that was wrong," this doesn't refer to the dispute over the funding of Reichert's ads, it refers to the claims made in a post in DailyKos that the Seattle Times article had not referenced them. The article did reference that dispute, and also noted that it was investigating claims received from the Republican party.

"Dismal Scientist"? What dark recess did this headline come from?

As for the ad credits, the claims are not wrong, and this is a matter for the FEC to decide on, not the media.

  • In the final days and getting close in the polls, everyone's panties are in a bunch.

Honestly, Dave's ads are scary as shit, and if I didn't think he was scarier, I may be moved by his efforts.

Not that it matters, as I'm waaaaaay over here in Seattle.
