When we first heard the news that Jack Zduriencik, was selected as the new Mariner General Manager, our first feeling was sadness and frustration. We know nothing about Zduriencik, he could be a genius and lead the M's back to the playoffs. Our reaction was simply to his profile: old white guy.
Mariner President Chuck Armstrong and CEO Howard Lincoln love being a part of the franchises decisions, which is too bad because they are pretty bad at running a baseball team.
We get the feeling that they are terrified to abandon their old way of doing business, meanwhile teams around them are looking for new ways of finding success.
So when the oldest candidate in the field was chosen our feeling was, "Here we go again, another yes man." It was a reaction that had nothign to do with Zduriencik, rather the lack of faith we have in Armstrong and Lincoln to do the right thing.
On the other hand, a Kim Ng selection would have thrilled us, so maybe we are just ageist, sexist, and racist when it comes to the selections of Armstrong and Lincoln.
USS Mariner is pro, Seth at Sports NW isn't so sure, and Three Sheets is a pretty funny show.
Next up the hire of an old manager who has had limited success and doesn't rock the boat.

USS Mariner pro? maybe with a bunch of conditions attached. but i'd be more inclined to say optimistic or hopeful.
When you are running the baseball equivalent of "A Chorus Line" or "Cats" down at Safeco, you don't rock the boat by hiring potential stars.
You just fill the cast with generic, underwhelming choices, and watch the sheeple keep lining up to buy tickets, pay parking, scarf garlic fries, etc.
Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
I'm willing to bet that Armstrong and Lincoln presented only 3 names to the owners, and we can all guess which name was left off the list.
you guys are off base on this one. it's a good hire...might not be the age or skin color that you are looking for, but a great baseball man.
