We're Going to Save $500 Under Obama
Tax Calculator from Barack Obama's website
Seattlest has to hand it to the Obama campaign for the way they've been spending their enormous amount of campaign cash. Yesterday, it was well-circulated that they're advertising in X-Box video games (the first candidate to ever do such a thing) to reach the kind of people who play NASCAR, hockey, and baseball games. Smart! Then, this morning, we headed over to their new taxcut calculator to tinker around with it.
If Obama wins and his tax plan takes hold, we'll save $500/year on our measly freelance writer income. That's nothing to shake a stick at. Five hundred dollars would look really nice in that IRA we currently can't afford to open. It would also look really sweet to our student loan companies, or going to the airlines to get us home to visit the nieces and nephews a little more often. It could help us pay for our self-employed health insurance. Oh, wait, but Obama has another plan that would lower those rates for us, allowing us to spend our tax savings elsewhere. Cool!
McCain's plan would give us $0.
We thought maybe it was a crock for a second, so we plugged information into the calculator to simulate what our far wealthier sister would most likely enter. We counted her children, student loans, guessed what they still owe on their large home, etc. John McCain will save her and her husband a whopping $224. Obama would save them $1300. Very interesting. Check it out for yourself, and then pound whatever drink's in your hand when Obama mentions it in the debate tonight.
