Time To Break Out The Pie Pans

Money may be tight, but Washington grew two million more boxes of apples this year than growers expected! The surplus is in Golden Delicious and Gala apples. To celebrate, we recommend you bake an apple pie. You may also want to sing a few rounds of this lusty ode to 'apples' by Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Favorite apple recipes?     Around Labor Day, we picked a ton of apples from some trees out in Magnuson Park. There are tons (TONS!) of apple trees, and plum and pear trees, around the city in the yards of people who let them fall to the ground and go to waste. Go knock on someone's door and politely ask if you can take some fruit off their hands!



    But failing that, go buy the surplus apples at the store.



    And then, however you get them, cut them up in bite-size chunks, minus the seeds, and put them in a big pot with about an inch of water on the bottom. Add a good amount of cinnamon, and a handful of raisins if you're into raisins. Turn the heat to medium, and come back and stir it every so often. After an hour, presto! you have home made applesauce with no sugar added. You can eat it as is, or you can add a cup of it to a quickbread recipe in place of bananas or zuchini or pumpkin or what-have-you, and make applesauce bread. Or applesauce muffins, with the same recipe and a different baking receptacle. Yum!
