Report On Attorney Generals Debate

The Seattle Times and City Club sponsored yesterday's debate between Rob McKenna and John Ladenburg, which was hosted at Seattle University as part of the school's Social Justice Week program. Times crack reporter Bob Young reports on how it all went down. We'll cut straight to the important part: neither are for legalization of marijuana, and in fact McKenna wants to reclassify pot as a "more serious drug" thanks to BC growers' potent strains.

I actually attended this debate and I'm a life-long D, but it's McKenna all the way. Ladenberg terrified me by talking about being an activist AG. Again and again-- "activist AG". He also gave me John McCain flashbacks by telling us, "I know how to do that. I've got the experience." Again and again. Ladenberg is old school and, I hate to say it, but I just don't think he gets it.

McKenna's leadership style appealed to me, probably because I listened to him and realized, "Hey! That's the kind of leader I am!". He's rational, executive, very public policy wonky. He's focused on leading his team of lawyers, not being an attack dog. He actually went out and visited every single Native American tribe in our state and appreciates the value of those relationships. Is he going to run for governor in 2012? I have no doubt. I honestly wish he was running this year instead of that tool, Rossi.

  • Tonight, in the last 90 minutes, I have seen 3 TV ads for McKenna. Not a single one for Lexenburgerfield. Therefor, I will do the Patriotic thing, and vote based upon what I saw on TV.

I'm for strengthening drug laws so I like McKenna, but I'm also for choice and NARAL's endorsement of Ladenburg. Probably McKenna, though, as he has a proven record and there are a lot of people out there calling Ladenburg a windbag.

  • I'll still vote for Rob McKenna, mostly because I do trust him as Attorney General (he'll uphold medical marijuana... right?), and I don't know shit about this other guy. He still wants it criminalized so he's not different enough to gamble on.

Honestly, I wasn't sure who to vote for in this race, because I am lazy, and thought McKenna seemed like a reasonably uncorrupt AG, but, as you got straight to an issue I care about, I realize that I will have to vote for Lagerfeld, or whatever is name is.
