The Greater Good: Yo! MAMA's a DJ?
A great mom is worth celebrating every single day, as Seattlest was reminded when our own good mother fell gravely ill in early 2008. Sometimes you have no idea how great you have it until you think you're losing it, and then--well, then you realize how important it is to appreciate and love on the people nearest and dearest to your heart while they are still around. That's why Yo! MAMA, tonight's benefit show at the Ethnic Cultural Theatre ("Educate. Enrich. Empower."), seems like such a great idea.
Yo! MAMA, sponsored by 206Zulu, UW Women's Studies and LBGT support/advocacy group Northwest Network, is a celebration of mamas in and beyond hiphop. Some ten female hiphop artists are performing, including the very fun duo Canary Sing and an emcee named Laura "Piece" Kelley who has been doing hiphop in the Northwest for decades. Child care is available, the event starts early and ends early, and the event is set up to be a beautiful celebration of hiphop and womanhood in synergy.
All of the proceeds go to Open Arms Perinatal Services, a non-profit that provides prenatal care and doula services to women who might not be able to afford those services otherwise. Even if you can't make the event tonight, consider donating some money to Open Arms; if you have no extra money these days, it's also an act of goodness to simply give someone's hard-working mama (perhaps even your own, if you're on good terms) a giant hug.
