Stalk of the Town

Saturday afternoon MvB is going to talk to a pack of Emerging Critics at the Seattle Rep--and hopefully avoid being panned--before heading to the Moore for Compagnie Heddy Maalem's version of Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps. Sunday he's packing for Iceland. Warm socks, etc.

Dropping into town between flights to and from Paris, Ronald is going to attend a seminar on blogging at the UW on Saturday.

Lots of traveling, as always, for Jay. He'll be flying to Boise on Friday, going to Whidbey Island for what promises to be a delicious dinner on Saturday, and then leaving on a jet plane for Florida at the end of the weekend.

Life is hectic and it's not going to get any less so in the foreseeable future for Katelyn, so in order to stave off the insanity gremlins, she is packing up and heading out to the peninsula for a weekend retreat involving silence, nature, and rosemary-roasted apples.

Kim will be starting and finishing her weekend in Ballard. Friday night, it's off to La Isla for some pulled pork empanadillas, followed by the badass stylings of Sassparilla Jug Band at Conor Byrne. Saturday, she plans on putting a few hours in for the Obama campaign. And Sunday night, it'll be back to CB for open mic night.

Donte has got a full weekend ahead, with a stop by the Laptop Battle tonight, a play at the Balagan Theater after a Boom Noodle dinner tomorrow, and a Sunday night of house music provided by SunTzu Sound at Flammable.

In the fall, most people turn their thoughts to candy and trick or treating, but not Charles. His thoughts turn to wine, or more specifically the grapes that become wine. It's just about time to pick and crush grapes at his mom's winery so he's heading down to Blooming Hill in Cornelius, Oregon to start making the first batch of wine they're legally allowed to sell. Unfortunately, it won't be ready for 18 months, so he'll be drinking older vintages all weekend.

Audrey is hoping to see two movies this weekend: what-your-government-doesn't-want-you-to-know doc Secrecy at the Northwest Film Forum and Rachel Getting Married, purported to be Jonathan Demme's best film since Silence of the Lambs (and perhaps Anne Hathaway's shot at an Oscar nomination).

Abbey will be dancing her last dance with The Trucks on Saturday at Chop Suey, when her favorite four bratty ballsy ladies take the Seattle stage for one final time. It won't be a completely sad night though, as A Gun That Shoots Knives should be in all their costumed glory to celebrate the release of their latest record. On Sunday, Abbey may try to expand her brunch boundaries by going somewhere other than Smith.

Jack is going to the Key Saturday night for the nostalgia-stoking arena rock band that is Weezer. He takes comfort in the knowledge that there will certainly be plenty of old mixed in with the new. Sunday, his wife leaves town for a couple days, so he'll be busy not showering, not wearing pants, and trying to convince friends to come over for a foosball tournament. He may have to settle and put on pants for that.

Here's a tip, MvB - while you're at the Rep, steer clear of the Mainstage where the 3 Musketeers stinker is showing.

We attending last night. To fair, the audience ate it up, cheering lustily then the 3 lads appeared on stage by sliding down ropes. Really.

There's no writing or character development to speak of, and a bunch of half-assed swordplay. The piece can't settle on the basic tone, even. Some is campy, some straight-up, some god-knows-what.

Still, that preview audience was the happiest I've heard a Rep crowd in many a year.

So *not* going to try the putrid shark, thanks! But I do plan to see what a township goes for. Maybe just naming rights.

Oh, and be sure to try the rotten shark. (See Anthony Bourdain's show on Iceland for reference.)

Hey MvB, take some cash with you on your trip and you may be able to pick up a good used country, cheap. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/10/business/worldbusiness/10icebank.html?em
