Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition, Oct. 3-5
A CONSCIOUSNESS OF LIMITLESS INQUIRY: The ferocious Naomi Wolf will be at Town Hall on Friday to do a reading and sign copies of her latest manifesto, Give Me Liberty: A Handbook for American Revolutionaries. The introduction alone is worth reading, and it's available online in full at Huffington Post. Ignore the Palin photo montage to the right of the text--or don't, because it adds a chilling sense of urgency to Wolf's words.
7:30 p.m., Friday // Town Hall, 1119 8th Ave // $5
LIKE HOLY MOLY, STUNTIN IS A HABIT: Talib Kweli, Little Brother and David Banner are in town on the Hip Hop Live! tour. Word is that David Banner (birthname Lavell Crump, honest to God) is the real highlight here; you have more than likely heard his insanely popular single, "Get Like Me," on the radio, a track earning him lavish accolades from the press ranks including nominations for three BET Hip Hop Awards. If you've ever seen and appreciated a "Chevy with the butterfly doors," or even if you haven't, you probably don't want to miss this show.
8 p.m., Sunday // Showbox at the Market, 1426 First Ave // $30-$35
OFF TO THE RAT RACES: Petco is holding a nation-wide Hamster Ball Derby at all of its locations this Sunday. You need to bring your own gerbil, rat, or hamster as well as one of those plastic balls that hamsters can push by running inside them (note to self: write surrealist vignette involving hamster balls). The idea here is that your little creature can get some exercise and you can meet owners of other little creatures--it's like a one-day dog park for rodents. Prizes and a hamster-sized Petco sale await!
1:30 p.m., Saturday // Petco nearest you // Free
AT EVERY OCCASION I'LL BE READY: The Anne Bonny, a Capitol Hill quirky dead-person-themed art, furniture and antique store named for a woman pirate (aaargggh!), hosts an art show/bazaar event called "Tragedy Brought Me Up" this weekend to honor the life of artist Elena Steuber and to benefit Portland's Rock and Roll Camp for Girls. The day includes an auction as well as a chance to look at some eclectic items for the home that you may find yourself needing to purchase.
4 p.m. - 9 p.m., Sunday // The Anne Bonny, 1355 E Olive Way // Free
