What Album Covers Were Shot in Seattle?

Word Magazine's readers have been creating a map detailing where iconic album cover photos were taken. So far, there are three listed in the Seattle area: Damien Jurado's Waters Ave. S., taken at Waters Ave. S.; Mudhoney's Superfuzz Bigmuff, taken at 207 First Ave. in Pioneer Square; and (of course) Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Posse on Broadway," taken at the NE corner of John and Broadway. (The definition of "album" is a loose one, obviously.) That's a good start, but there must be a lot missing. Was the cover for the Singles soundtrack shot locally? Sleater-Kinney's The Hot Rock (or was that PDX)? Do us a favor: Check out the map, then add a cover or two to our little spot on the globe.

  • This has become a challenge.

I always thought the Singles cover was taken at UW somewhere

  • Closer examination of The Hot Rock's cover reveals an Oregon license plate on the taxicab. PDX it is.

Singles could also be UW--it looks a lot like that strip between the rows of cherry trees, and behind them is some sort of kiosk that looks like the campus bulletin board they have there...

Singles soundtrack looks like Pioneer, or that part of Occidental that's pedestrian only.

I added Mix-A-Lot. I had a hard time finding other Seattle covers just by browsing bands. Most Seattle bands that come to mind were grunge bands, who were bigger on abstract surreal pictures than places in real life -- best I could do was Pearl Jam at the Gorge.

Added Dave Matthews' Some Devil. Picture taken on the Fremont Bridge.

  • That's the can-do spirit.

I just added the Westin Hotel on 5th Avenue which was on the cover of Modest Mouse's "The Lonesome Crowded West."
