Weekend Sports Wrap-up

"Shoeless," by Flickr contributor gulinvardar
We were thrilled to see Mad Men get some hardware at the Emmys last night, since it is a fave at the Seattlest crib. In one of the more stunning scenes this season, Don Draper has a confrontation with his blackmailing adultress, where, with a smile, he seductively slides his hand up her dress, then grabs her by her girly-bits (yeah, those girly-bits), and curtly tells her to cut the shit, all the while flashing that dreamboat smile. Powerful, very un-PC, and certainly unexpected.
Yesterday at Qwest Field, Matt Hasselbeck pulled a Don Draper, in the 37-13 win against the St. Louis Rams. After handing the ball off to Julius Jones, he continued an innocuous decoy roll-out until, when Jones cut to the outside, Hasselbeck charged downfield, waved for Jones to follow, and then freed Jones to score on the 29-yard run when the QB leveled two Ram defensive backs with a single well-placed block.
Later in the game, Hasselbeck scrambled for a first down, ran to the sidelines, and flipped the ball into the stands, to the adoration of the crowd, and the chagrin of referee Gene Steratore who scolded the QB all the way back to the huddle. It's feels good being bad, doesn't it, Matt?
Meanwhile, perma-punk and inappropriately named Richie Incognito, a Ram offensive lineman who supposedly sprained a knee earlier in the game, was reduced to laying on his back after a play and kicking wildly at the Hawk linemen who just seconds earlier had planted him firmly on his backside.
Such was the dominance yesterday. The Seahawks (1-2) could do little wrong, smooth and calculating, and striking when you least expect it, while the Rams (0-3) were little more than TV script caricatures.
(More sports after the jump!)
Storm: The Storm split the first two games of the three-game playoff series this weekend. The team started slowly on Friday, trailed by 17 at the half and lost Game One 77-69 to the L.A. Sparks. The Storm rebounded Sunday by winning at home 64-50, tying the series and forcing Game Three on Tuesday at Key Arena.
Cougars: First-year coach Paul Wulff got his first win at WSU (1-3) as the Cougs dismantled Portland State 48-9 at Pullman. The win came at a huge cost, though, as the Cougs lost their first- and second string quarterbacks to serious injuries, including starter Gary Rogers whose neck was broken on a late hit.
Mariners: The M's have lost their last eleven games. Need more evidence the team has quit? We don't.
(For the record: We don't condone grabbing anyone's bits, girly or otherwise in order to make a point. Apparently, that's how they rolled in the Sixties, tho. Also, no girly bits were harmed in the writing of this post.)

Assaulting and threatening a woman, no matter what she's 'done' to deserve it, is not un-PC. It's wrong. Mad Men is a show that accurately and dramatically portrays the rampant sexism of the time, but lauding it as a great 'un-PC' show misses that point entirely and makes you look like you want those times to return.

Assault (or battery for that matter) is always wrong. Agreed.
