Put Your WISAARD Learning Cap On

smith%20tower%20upside%20down%20by%20single%20malt.JPGHave you heard about WISAARD? It's a really cool toy research tool from the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP) that helps you locate historic sites statewide, searchable by county, city, and registered site name or status. It might not be stylized or streamlined, but WISAARD is just plain neat--and useful, if you're looking for details but don't know precisely which details you're looking for yet. Amateur local history nerds, read on:

For each site on the zoomable map, the DAHP has a page full of information and classifications. For instance, when we searched for the Pioneer Building and the Pergola on Yesler and 1st, we found a fairly cogent five paragraph narrative on the story of the buildings, four photos of the properties, and and a quick overview of architectural details and listing codes. Did you know the Pioneer Building housed a fancy-schmancy speakeasy during Prohibition?

Not all of the sites have historical essays, but the site's image banks are worth spelunking in some afternoon. Check out WISAARD's photos of the Black Diamond Coal Mine, or Bellevue's The Mooring (a gorgeous old Craftsman home). Here's Volunteer Park, with two gorgeous old shots of the Water Tower.

Enjoy! We certainly will, while we sit chained to a desk and procrastinate on pressing deadlines. (It's the American Way.) And maybe on the weekend, we'll adventure out to experience some of these sites in person!

You know, if it was coded to standards it would work in all browsers. Read the generated HTML and you'll see code that explicitly checks for IE. (after lines and lines of empty space). That's been a bad idea since, well, forever.

If you do look at the site in IE, you'll see it's not simple - this isn't some piece of junk thrown together in an afternoon. Rather, it's an application that was designed and/or built by ambitious souls with a poor idea of internet standards.

    Too bad.

Guys, it can still be a helpful cool site and not work in Firefox. I don't think this is a case of MS worship so much as it is old technology, and there's no reason to slam a databank just because it works in only one browser. Give 'em a break.

If it doesn't work with Firefox (and it doesn't), this site is worthless. Microsoft-worship loses again!

I'm on a Mac, to boot. I'm twice removed!

See, IE is still good for something, and that something is called "running WISAARD." You're missing out!!

    :(

Note: Currently, WISAARD is only available if you are visiting the site with Internet Explorer running on a PC. In order to run properly, your "Pop Up Blocker" must be turned off.
