Amanda Knox Update
University of Washington student and murder suspect Amanda Knox is awaiting trial in an Italian jail cell. Her parents and friends—and Amanda herself—still proclaim her innocence, but things aren't looking up for the 21-year-old.
Yesterday the BBC revealed that one of the other men charged with Meredith Kercher's murder is seeking a separate trial. Rudy Hermann Guede has stated through his lawyer he believes he "would be punished by sharing a trial with the others." At least in the Knox-friendly U.S. press, Guede has been painted as the aggressor in the crime and the most-likely killer. That he believes standing trial with Knox and her former boyfriend would negatively affect his sentencing does not bode well. Guede, Knox, and her Italian ex Raffaele Sollecito, have a pre-trial hearing scheduled for next week.
In other not-good-news for Knox, Diya "Patrick" Lumumba, a Perugia bar owner who Knox falsely accused of being involved in the murder, will seek payment for damages and defamation. Lumumba was held by Italian police for two weeks after Knox implicated him, and he was released when the evidence did not back up Knox's claim. Even if Knox avoids criminal charges in the murder, which is unlikely, she will at the very least face financial and civil ramifications for her involvement, à la O.J. Simpson. We all know what we've come to believe about O.J.—that he got away with murder. It's looking like Amanda Knox won't be so lucky.
