Weekend Theatre: interlace & 10-Minute Plays

It's gonna be hot as hell this weekend—ninety on Saturday—but fortunately you have an escape: the dark recesses of the theatre, which is going strong all summer long.

interlace.jpginterlace [falling star] at the Annex Theatre goes a long way towards putting to pasture the notion that theatre is all high-art and the movies are where the fun is. An original play by Scotto Moore, interlace is a sci-fi/fantasy epic that takes its mythology from Gnosticism and its aesthetic from B-movies, with a dollop of Philip K. Dick thrown in for good measure.

Going into the plot is, frankly, counter-productive—just go see it and enjoy yourself. Jen Moon's performance as the nameless amnesiac heroine is smart and funny. LaChrista Borgers's turn as the robot companion Trickle confirms that women in pink wigs make us think bad thoughts. Stan Shields brings all the gravitas and physical presence you could want to his super-hero character The Amazing Dr. X, while capturing his vulnerable side. And Kristina Sutherland, who has yet to disappoint us, recalls what Deckard must have been like before he became the burned-out shell of a man we meet in Blade Runner, with her hard-as-nails performance as psychic security officer Agent Grey.

Nexus-Green.jpgTickets are available online or at the door for $12 GA, $5 student; interlace runs through Aug. 30 at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

And over at Richard Hugo House, Next Stage's The Nexus Project: A Ten-Minute Play Festival opens this Saturday, featuring new short plays by some of our favorite Seattle theatre artists, including Marya Sea Kaminsky and John Longenbaugh.

Visit here to see the schedule; there are two separate programs of different plays which alternate between 7:30 and 9:30 time slots. Tickets available online, but this opening weekend shows are free (donations would be appropriate, though).
