Starbucks Opts Against Pot In Amsterdam Shop

This is NOT how the new Amsterdam Starbucks will look. Courtesy of Flickr Contributor Amsterdam Asp

Despite closing stores all over the world, Starbucks announced today they'll be opening their first non-airport store in Amsterdam in 2009. Sadly, the mermaid has decided not to go the traditional Amsterdam coffee shop route, which means no Purple Haze with your Frappucino, folks.

Starbucks' official reason for not allowing its patrons in the Netherlands to smoke a bowl with their morning coffee is that Starbucks does not allow smoking at any of its locations worldwide. Lame Starbucks. Lame. We think it could be huge for Starbucks to be a real coffee shop in Amsterdam. Imagine the possibilities: a featured bud of the month along with a drink special. Coffee-named strains of pot grown organically with old Sbux coffee grounds? "This is our special strain, Blueberry Buzz." Starbucks bongs, pipes, rolling papers, becoming the largest seller of Starbucks ice cream...the possibilities are endless.

In reality though, even if Starbucks was going to open a real Dutch coffee shop, we'd still choose a hundred other places in Amsterdam first before heading over to a sterile Starbucks. And we imagine most folks visiting Amsterdam, or who live there, will likely feel the same way.
