After an amazing Opening Ceremony, the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics got down to business on Saturday, and many athletes with local connections were in action. Here's a glimpse at a few local athletes over the first 5 days of competition:

Amy Tryon, Duvall: Equestrian Eventing
Tryon was ninth after the dressage competition heading into the cross-county round, where her horse Poggio stumbled and Tryon was thrown off. Under stiffer new rules enacted just days ago, Tryon was disqualified for the error.

Megan Jendrick (Quann), Puyallup: Swimming
Finished fifth in the 100m breaststroke, an event in which she won the gold medal in 2000.

Stephanie Cox, Gig Harbor; Hope Solo, Richland/UW: Soccer
1-0 win vs. Japan, 2-0 loss vs. Norway and 4-0 win vs. New Zealand in group stage play.

Melanie Roach, Bonney Lake: Weightlifting
The mother of three finished sixth overall in the 53kg division, setting an American record in the process.

Margaret Hoelzer, Seattle: Swimming
Won a bronze medal in the 100m backstroke.

Nathan Adrian, Bremerton: Swimming
Nathan swam in the qualifying heat of the 400m free relay, and helped the team to qualify. He was replaced by Michael Phelps in the finals and the team won a gold medal. Adrian will earn a medal for his role in the relay.

Emily Silver, Bainbridge Island: Swimming
Silver won a silver medal for her role in the 400m free relay.

Many local athletes continue in action over the remainder of the games. Check for more updates later.
