M's Cut Vidro; Wonder Where to Mail His Paycheck

The Mariners cut Jose Vidro today, attempting to shed the $8.5 million in payroll as they "look toward 2009". As Dave Andriesen of the P-I puts it: "Vidro, 33, batted .234 in 85 games this season. He made $8.5 million this season, of which his last team, the Washington (N)ationals, paid $2.5 million. He has a vesting option for 2009 that activates at 600 plate appearances, which he will not reach, triggering a $500,000 buyout." If another team picks up Vidro, the M's will be responsible for over $5.5 million of Vidro's salary for the remainder of the season. Got that? Us neither. But we're sure situations like this probably contribute to the team's current situation. (Richie Sexson is batting .278 since moving to the Yankees in July, in case you wondered.)

Big Sexy hit a grand slam last night for the Yankees.

Why the M's didn't unload Ibanez now that he's getting hot again is beyond me.

To answer your question - no I do not get that.

The original post it fine, and correct, except for one point. The M's are not responsible for $5.5 million of Vidro's salary for the rest of the season. Makes no sense. He's making $8.5 million this season you state. Okay. The M's are paying $6 million of that you also state. Okay. The season is 3/4 over. That means he's due approximately $1.5 million from the M's.

Of all the dumb things about the Mariners over the past few years, continuing to burn plate appearances with Vidro as the DH was the dumbest. I guess they really did believe he'd be the new Edgar.
