FedEx Takes a Special Interest in Local Hoops Recruit

In the basketball world, Abdul Gaddy is destined to be the Next Big Thing. The Tacoma Bellarmine Prep senior is ranked by Scout.com as the second-best point guard in the country. Since he is uncommitted to a college program, you can imagine he gets lots of mail and the phone rings often.
Meanwhile, Abdul's mother, Osene Gaddy, has worked as a customer service rep at a local FedEx office near Tacoma for the past 11 years. Earlier this month, while watching her son play in a tournament, she received a call from her office. (Drat!) It wasn't from her boss. Nor her boss's boss. No, she received a call from FedEx CEO and President David Bronczek, who by chance, just wanted to chat about her son and the weather and stuff. Turns out, Bronczek is a major booster of the University of Memphis basketball program, and just wanted to put in the good word for the school.
The only problem with this little coinkydink is that it's possibly a major recruiting violation. FedEx is red-faced, and the university has already self-reported the incident to the NCAA as a possible infraction. And one kid in Tacoma is getting a good lesson in how this crazy world of ours works.
