Get Out Saturday: Tour de Fat @ Gas Works
In the wake of a brutal tussle between car and bicycle last weekend, it's good that New Belgium Brewing's Tour de Fat, the "traveling celebration of all things bicycle," arrives in town on Saturday, opposite the carbon-spewing, combustion engine worship-fest that is Seafair, what with the supersonic jets and souped-up motorboats.
So for those who favor pedal-power over horsepower, you can show up at Gas Works Park at 9 a.m. to register yourself and your bike, and be sure to dress up! This is a New Orleans-style funeral for the car; the bicycle procession is at 11 a.m.; "Carpocalypse Now" is at 1:30; and at 3, one lucky local is officially swearing off cars for a whole year, donating her automobile, and going home on a fancy new bike.
In between, there's plenty to do: kegs are tapped at 11 a.m., and from noon on there are side-show acts and a trio of solar-powered bands. (See here for the full Seattle line-up.)
And all this for a good cause: the Tour de Fat raises money for local charities and aims to educate on the social and environmental value of bicycling. Seattle's beneficiaries this year are the Bicycle Alliance of Washington and Bike Works. Plus there's beer! What could be better?
9 a.m.-4 p.m., Sat., Aug. 2 // Gas Works Park // free entry // all ages, 21+ for beer
