Capitol Hill Block Party in Brief, Les Savy Fav in Briefs

thisistheblockparty.jpg
Friday
Head Like a Kite: By the time we got into Neumos, we'd unfortunately missed most of their set. Whatever they were playing when we walked in, it was awesome and everyone was into it. It wasn't long, however, before they went into show-closing mode with more ethereal, experimental jam stuff. We dig Head Like a Kite, but they also bore us sometimes.

Menomena: Fate, that surly sonofabitch, has kept us from seeing Menomena too many times. We'd be damned if we were going to let that happen this time around. That said, we were a little disappointed when Menomena's set started off so weak and with such horrible sound. It seemed all the wrong parts of the music were being pushed above everything else. It wasn't long, however, before someone got their shit together and the rest of their set sounded excellent. "Weird" was our favorite song by far and rest of the crowd seemed to agree--particularly the drunk chick who kept running into us. Hey drunk chick, it's only seven o'clock. Pace yourself.

PWRFL Power: Watching PWRFL Power at a music festival is like watching Napoleon Dynamite with our mom. The more we laugh, the more she says, "I don't get it. This is stupid." It's hard to enjoy a PWRFL Power show without being painfully aware of the perplexed people around you. It's also easy to write him off as a novelty act, what with the "Japanese guy with a guitar singing quirky songs" thing. But we think maybe there's more to him that that. Even silly lyrics about holding chopsticks wrong, when paired with his frantic finger-picking seem so honest and genuine. That's what we like about PWRFL Power. There's a lot of emotion going on under all that shtick.

More on Les Savy fav, dildos, Fleet Foxes and more after the jump.

Girl Talk: We experienced Girl Talk from afar. Which probably means we didn't experience Girl Talk at all. Say what you want about Greg Gillis' musical cred, all we know is people were having a blast with him Friday night.

Les Savy Fav: For us, one of the main draws to the block party this year was Les Savy Fav. We're new fans and have never seen them live before, but we love 1999's The Cat and the Cobra and 2007's Let's Stay Friends, so we were excited to see what we were in for. Musically, they were fantastic. Really tight. Apparently, however, LSF live should really be called "The Tim Harrington Show." Yeah, he was funny and entertaining and that's great. That's important. But are we crazy to think a vocalist should, you know, sound good? Would we tolerate a guitarist who sounded terrible, but whose stage antics were hilarious? At one point Harrington paraded about with a dildo in his headband and we couldn't help but think, how appropriate. But maybe we're being too harsh. Bottom line, we had a great time during Les Savy Fav. So maybe that's what it's all about. What do you think?

Saturday
The Physics: Though hoping to catch New Faces, The Cave Singers, and The Physics, we arrived a bit late on Saturday and only caught the last part of The Physics' set. In fact, we only got to hear two full songs before their sound went out. Unphased, they did what they could and went on with a few raps, sans music. What little we heard, we liked, so we'll just have to catch them some other time, preferably in a dark club instead of a tiny outdoor stage in broad daylight.

The Builders and the Butchers: We just happened to be having a drink at Moe Bar when we checked our printed schedule and realized these guys were about to get started down the hall at Neumos. Holy shit, they were amazing. For us, this was the most rousing and entertaining band all weekend. We bought a CD.

Fleet Foxes: Oh Fleet Foxes. We loves you.

Though Donte's "aftermath" photo (at end of Katelyn's post) is more impressive, ours is more depressing. Because Pabst is gross y'all.

gross, yes, but only $2!

Hilarious LSF commentary... dildo in his headband?!! And I agree -- The Builders and the Butchers were one of my favorites this year.
