@unknown user not initially. the spikes were metal then shortly after they began using the plastic spikes. @abbey just because the lake was checked back in 2005 doesn't mean a good job was done.

Also, the stakes used to hold down the plastic sheeting supposedly also were plastic.

I've heard the milfoil theory too -- but divers had last checked the bottom of Green Lake in 2005 and didn't find these spikes. Surely if they were from the 80's they would have been there then.

the latest theory is that they are the spikes that were holding down the milfoil (kee hee, "milf oil"...tee hee) net that was installed quite some time ago (early 80's, i think they said?). i forget what other theory they said on the 12 o'clock news today, but they are certainly leaning more towards it being something that workers did back in the day and not some asshole trying to impale people. they look like 3' long tent-spikes.
