Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition, July 25-27
GIRLS WITH STRONG GASTROCS: The Pacific Northwest Highland Games are up in Enumclaw this weekend! Have you ever seen a troupe of Highland dancers, or examined any of their calves? Those ladies have serious plantar flexion skillz. And the National Highland Dance Competition's not all that's going down. We're talking pub piping, Scottish sing-alongs, a full-blown ceilidgh (it's more than just a barn dance!) and of course the field games! Seattlest's Scottish blood thrills to the thought.
Fri-Sun, times vary // Enumclaw Expo Center // $22 two-day pass // kid friendly!

BIKES AREN'T JUST FOR COMMUTING: It's all well and good to use your bike to get you important places. But why, when you can pop extreme wheelies, fly off jumps, and spin 360s mid-air? The Funhouse is hosting a Triple B BMX demonstration on Saturday, and it's free to go down there and watch people who really love their two-wheeled trickster friends. There will be a BBQ and a raffle: two more excellent reasons to head down there.
12 p.m. - 7 p.m., Saturday // The Funhouse, 206 5th Ave. N // Free!
EARTH COMING CHEAPLY TO AN END: The BETA Society's mission: to recreate one of the greatest films of our time, Armageddon, in thirty days and using $100 max. The very funny (and likely nutty) fruits of the local comedy group's labors will be screened at Chop Suey on Sunday, and afterwards there will be "a bunch of bands" covering Aerosmith songs. Cheap and interesting date idea alert! You won't want to miss a thing. Youtube preview here.
8 p.m., Sunday // Chop Suey, 1425 E Madison // $5
OLD SOUL, NEW LOVE: Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings are a key part of the popular retro-soul movement sweeping the Western world these days. Jones is the real deal; she was performing as a soul and funk singer back in the day, and arrived on the scene again in the late 90s to rescue us all from Third Eye Blind. It's been a rocky road, but Jones and the Dap Kings are here to stay after their 2006 smash hit 100 Days, 100 Nights (one of Seattlest's favorite albums this summer). What kind of power you got? Soul power! At the ZOO!
6 p.m., Sunday // Woodland Park Zoo // $19, available only at the Sand Point Metropolitan Market
