Peanut-Free Zone at Safeco Field?

When you think about it, a Major League ballgame must be a nightmare for folks who are super allergic to peanuts. Peanut allergies can be some of the most severe, where simply coming into contact with the shells can trigger a fatal reaction. Even if you choose not to get a bag, the shells and remnants are everywhere at a ballgame. And, considering the Mariners' less-than-stellar season, the possibility of an anaphylactic reaction in the middle of Safeco could certainly keep those with severe allergies away.

With that in mind, the Mariners and Safeco Field are making two sections (311 and 312) peanut-free zones August 5th and September 9th. The sections will go through a special deep cleaning, and the peanut guy is banned from the section. There will be signs designating it a no-peanut area and fans sitting there cannot pack in their own peanuts. Apparently, a minor league stadium in Iowa went completely peanut-free in May. Considering peanut allergies are the most prevalent and deadliest food allergy in the United States, we understand the impetus. But a ballgame without someone enjoying a bag of peanuts seems almost sacrilegious.
